There are various motives why you would need to restart your iPhone14, be it to troubleshoot issues and bringing certain changes into effect, or simply to get a fresh start.
Another reason to restart your iPhone could be to resolve a frozen display, in which case the restart would be called a force restart.
Restarting the iPhone 14 is not rocket science, and there are various ways to do it too. Read on as we streamline it for you.
Restarting Using iPhone 14`s Buttons
The most common method used to reboot an iPhone 14 is clicking those side buttons.
Press and hold the Volume Up or Down button and the Side button, and when the Slide to Power Off appears, slide the switch to the right. This way the iPhone 14 will switch off.
Wait for around 15 seconds, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears, confirming that your iPhone 14 will now power on.
Using Settings
Launch the Settings app on your iPhone 14 and choose General. Scroll down and click on Shut Down, then drag the Slide to Power Off slider to the right, and your phone will power off.
Again, and as aforementioned, you will now need to hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears, confirming that your iPhone 14 will now power on.
Using an On-Screen Menu
The iPhone 14 has a Restart option on a specified on-screen menu, which you can opt for to reboot your phone.
Since this is an accessibility feature, one has to switch it on from the phone`s Settings app.
To do this, launch Settings from your iPhone, then tap Accessibility > Touch > Assistive Touch, and turn on the Assistive Touch option.
A white dot will appear on your phone`s screen, tap on it to open the menu, and when it launches select Device > More > Restart.
You will be prompted with a message that reads “Are you sure you want to restart your iPhone?”, with Cancel and Restart options beneath it. Obviously, in our case we need to tap on Restart. Your iPhone will then turn off and back on.
What causes an iPhone 14 Display to Freeze, and how to Force Restart it?
As at time of writing, there are various reports of displays freezing either as a still picture for some iPhone 14 series models, or as a chock-a-block green colour taking over some of last year`s iPhone 13 series screens.
This can be due to a major software upgrade which usually bring some bugs with them at least at launch. In our case, the recent Apple iOS 16 seems to be riddled with these type of bugs and glitches, which have been popping up and widely discussed about on the internet. Topping the list of issues is exactly the odd screen freezing bug.
The iPhone will stop working entirely, and the user has to force restart the device to resolve the matter. Although, there were also cases were the iPhone couldn`t reach the home screen, but the app switcher was still working, meaning that the iPhone isn`t completely unresponsive.
Rumours go that Apple will be fixing these issues with the new iOS 16.2 update, or at least addressing some of these bugs.
Meanwhile, it is good to know how Apple users can go about it if their iPhone 13 or 14 happen to display a green colour and get stuck or freeze to unresponsiveness.
Force Restart Method
The method is as simple as it is efficient. We still hope that it isn`t utilised a lot, since it would equal to frustrated users, but hang on, Apple is coming to the rescue.
In the meantime, all you have to do when your iPhone freezes is to:
- Press and release the Volume Up button
- Press and release the Volume Down button
- Press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo appear on the screen (note that it can take up to 30 seconds for the logo to show up)
- Once the logo pops up, you can let go of the Side button
- Your iPhone will now finish the rebooting process
This procedure will make sure that your phone turns off and then back on, even if it isn`t responding to your other taps.
Often annoyed by this freezing bug, what can I do?
Until Apple resolves this by launching the new iOS 16.2, if your iPhone issues persist, it is a good idea to try and reset all your phone settings to potentially resolve your issues. This applies also in case you have customised too many settings and want to start from scratch.
It is easy to bring all your settings to their factory values, and it`s important to note that you won`t lose your saved data and media files.
When you perform a reset setting, your iPhone will bring your network settings, keyboard dictionary, location settings and privacy settings back to their default values. It also removes Apple Cards if you have added any of those to your phone.
In case you don`t want to reset all settings, but only specific ones, you can do so on the Reset page.
How to Factory Reset all Settings on your iPhone
To kick start the settings reset process, open the settings app on your iPhone, then:
- In Settings, go to General > Reset
- On the Reset page, at the top, select Reset All Settings
- At this stage if you had set up a passcode, you must enter it to continue
- A prompt will open from the bottom of your phone`s screen, tap on Reset All Settings
You won`t get any further prompts, so make sure that you really want to reset all your settings, thus erasing all your customised settings.
